This week - Tyler Whitney from Southern Adirondack Independent Living (SAIL) gave a great presentation on what SAIL provides not only to our community, but to more than 15 counties. SAIL began when the American Disabilities Act was passed by President George H. W. Bush. Tyler indicated they have over 4000 pieces of equipment currently on loan to citizens who need assistance. The areas of service SAIL provides include: health care and insurance, social security, employment, education, transportation, housing, computer skills, assistive technology, durable medical equipment, leaving or avoiding nursing homes and assessibility. Programs and Services include: free loans of equipment and assitive technology, information and referrals, advocacy, indepedent living skills training, peer mentoring, computer classes, Nursing Home Transition and Diversion and Traumatic Brain Injury Medicaid Waivers, and Nursing Home Education.
Again thanks to the many volunteers who helped with the Ringing of the Bell for the Salvation Army Saturday, December 1st. Special thanks go to new members Lynda Albright and Neil Lebowitz who volunteered for this event within 48 hours after becoming a member. Thank you Neil and Lynda.
Captain Leo Lloyd thanked the club for helping collect much needed money for the Salvation Army's. We do not have a total yet, but Leo indicated it was a very sucessful fund raiser for the Salvation Army.
Robert Krug, a former Colonel from the US Army and member of our club passed away recently.
Service Opportunities:
December 14th - Holiday Baskets - The Salvation Army needs volunteers to help prepare food baskets for needy families. This effort includes unloading boxes of food. The location of this is at their Broad Street building. See our Rotary Web site for signup and time.
December 6-24 - Warm the Children Program - In addition, to managing the finances of this program in conjuction with the Post Star and Salvation Army, our club helps needed families shop for much needed clothing. Volunteering includes assisting families with their shopping. This requires calling the parents, arranging for a mutual meeting time at J.C. Penny's and being there for when they have completed their shopping. Contact Dave Bogue for details.
