Thursday, October 29th our Club dedicated its first Peace Pole to Cindy Amell.

Club President Lili Dobert provided remarks on the history of peace poles and its meaning for our community:

“The Peace Pole movement began in Japan in 1955, inspired by Masahisa Goi, a Japanese philosopher and peace advocate who was deeply affected by the atomic bombing and devastation of World War II. He believed that peace must begin in the hearts and minds of individuals and that we all share responsibility for creating a more peaceful world. It begins in how we treat one another, how we listen, how we resolve disagreements, and how we choose kindness and understanding over conflict.
In 1976, his message on Peace Poles, ‘May Peace Prevail on Earth,’ became the foundation of a global movement.
Although the message originated in Japan more than 70 years ago, its meaning remains just as important today. This pole connects us to a worldwide community united by one simple hope. May Peace Prevail on Earth carry a powerful message that transcends cultures, backgrounds, and beliefs.
Glens Falls Rotary Club has formally been designated as a Peace Club and this is our first peace pole. One of many. As Rotarians, we believe in service above self and recognize that peacebuilding starts in our own communities. We hope to inspire conversations, encourage reflection, and remind everyone who sees this pole that each of us has a role to play in creating a more peaceful world.
Today, we dedicate this Peace Pole to Cindy Amell. It is her birthday today. May this Peace Pole stand as a lasting reminder of our shared hopes for our community and inspire all who visit.
Thank you to everyone who helped make this installation possible: Dave, Andy, Kim, Natalia, Kevin and Kathy. And, thank you to Wiawaka, for your insight for providing a place where this message of peace can take root and grow.”
